In the post WW2 era until probably the 1980s, building plastic models was one of the most popular past times for American boys. My dad and his older brothers got into building models as was the norm growing up in the 1960s and 1970s. My Dad passed this interest in down to me as well, and I started building model airplanes pretty young. I always found it weird that other children in my generation didn't care for this declining art form, and wanted to share it to raise awareness to our generation. Give it a try, it's quite fun, and you learn a lot about history!
Visit your local hobby store (I recommend Hobby Town) and pick out a model you are interested in.
